The Little Things

We all know the old adage “you don’t realize what you’ve got until it’s gone”.

Plenty of emotions certainly have been stirred up during the pandemic - frustration, fear, anger to name a few.  But I’d like to think a far more positive one has bubbled its way to the surface in the last few weeks - gratitude.

The circuit breaker period has truly highlighted how much of our daily lives we’ve taken for granted.  Personally for me this is the longest I’ve gone without hitting a golf ball since I first picked up the game 20 years ago.  Yes, we all know how incredibly infuriating chasing that silly white ball can be but whether we like it or not, golf is a part of our lives! Beyond the attempts to perfect an imperfect game, I miss the social aspect of a day out on the links.  Not just the catching up with my assortment of golfing kakis in my foursome on the course. I’m talking about chatting with staff members around the club, tucking in to yummy, good old-fashioned classics at the golfers terrace, the funky smell of the locker room and yes, even the gloopy club-provided sunscreen. I miss it all.

Whether my first round back is a 66 or a 96 I’m sure it’ll be the most enjoyable 5 hours of the year so far!

So as we inch closer to the reopening of golf clubs & facilities let’s be mindful and more appreciative of the little things. The smell of fresh cut grass in the morning, the sound of a ball rattling into the cup, the fist bump with your partner at the end of the day.

Golf has a beautiful way of teaching us some of life’s most important lessons, let’s add another to that list when we next tee it up. Life’s too short to be taken too seriously, so smile, be grateful and enjoy the little things.
